You may feel alone when you decide to downsize your home to better match your needs. You are not alone, all across America, and internationally, people are choosing smaller homes. There are as many reasons (and benefits) as there are choices when it comes to finding your new home. The days of the McMansion appears to be disappearing. Families and individuals are choosing to live in smaller homes for a variety of reasons.
- lower utility costs
- lower property taxes
- freedom from yard work
- more time for traveling
- upkeep and repairs are less costly
As a grandparent, I moved to be closer to the local amenities and my family members. It wasn’t all that long ago that families lived in multi-generational homes where grandparents were available to assist in the raising of the grandchildren. My grandchildren have plenty of family members, while not living in the same household, within a few miles of them. Each person and each grandparent gives the children a unique form of love. The children, knowing so many people love them are happy and well-adjusted.
With the economic struggles of the past few years the idea of co-housing has become popular. This can be a great way to reduce costs and share chores. Co-housing has become popular also for seniors who don’t have family close by allowing them to live in a community.
One option I have been considering lately is the idea of an in-law apartment. I love my apartment and the community I have found here, but the idea of renting an in-law apartment from my son is an idea we have been discussing. It makes more sense to me to contribute my rent money to a family member. I recently read In-laws, Outlaws, and Granny Flats by Michael Litchfield which is one of the best books I have seen on the subject, and unlike many books has plenty of beautiful pictures. You can check out the website for more amazing photos of in-law apartments.
Downsizing our homes doesn’t have to mean we are depriving ourselves. If anything, when we choose to downsize we are giving ourselves the opportunity to grab life by the horns and live it to the fullest. If you love living in a beautiful space, then you may love living in a smaller home. A smaller home gives you the freedom to decorate creatively and with needing fewer items to fill your home it costs much less.
- If you want more freedom and control in your life.
- If you want freedom from high utility bills or a large mortgage.
- If you would like to travel more
- If you would like more time to spend with those you love
The answer may be a smaller home for you too. Whether you choose an apartment, in-law suite, RV, or choose to buy or build a new home you can be free to live your life the way you really want to.
